During the 3rd International Women's Day in 1914, the Catholic farmer's daughter Käthe meets the Protestant pastor's daughter Marie, one of the first female students in Imperial Germany and active in the women's movement. After World War I breaks out, the realities of life change for the two women, who become increasingly friendly across denominational and class lines. The war leaves its mark on the families' lives. Käthe's favorite brother Heinrich does not return from the front and is missing, his friend Paul is severely war-damaged. After the war is over, Käthe decides to move to the city with Marie. For the first time, women are not only allowed to stand for election to the new People's Assembly, but also to vote actively. A great first success for the women's movement towards more equal rights.
