In just three weeks, a fjord ship from Norway is to become the new Elbe ferry between Cuxhaven and Brunsbüttel. The aim is to relieve the existing Glücksstadt-Wischhafen route. For people in the north, this not only means a shorter connection to Scandinavia and the Benelux countries, but they also hope for a faster connection between their homes and workplaces. Finally, no more long waits in traffic jams!
Managing Director Heinrich Ahlers and his team have just under three weeks in which to check the facilities and technical equipment and train the work processes. For example, safety maneuvers to test the lifeboats, passages to reach the mooring in Cuxhaven with difficult currents. Below deck, there is a lack of furniture, signage and food in the cafeteria. Fenders have to be welded on from the outside as spacers for the harbor wall. Two each for Cuxhaven and Brunsbüttel, because they have to fit perfectly so that the ramps are properly sealed. Captains, officers, crew and caterers have to grow together in an all-male team. So that everything is ready in time for the maiden voyage.
The Nordreportage accompanies the ship's crew as they transform a 130-meter-long fjord ship into a new Elbe ferry - from hauling it out of Norway, to welding work on the outer ends, the renovation on board and the maiden voyage.
