Brief synopsis

What later went down in history as the "Asian financial crisis" of 1997/98 was the biggest global financial crisis since the collapse of the world economy in the 1930s. The crisis came unannounced: the world seemed to be on a steady growth path. But suddenly hunger and mass unemployment came back to countries that had been prospering until then.

The Asian financial crisis was the biggest global financial crisis since the 1930s. For the first time since World War II, there was again a real danger of a complete collapse of the world economy. What was worrying for all crisis managers at the time was that they had not seen the crisis coming and were not prepared for it. And that their hasty measures not only failed to bear fruit for a long time, but only made the situation worse. How could this happen? What were the causes? These are the questions that this documentary explores. Ten years later, in 2008/09, the world actually stood for a few weeks on the precipice of the complete collapse of the global economy. The "global financial crisis" demonstrated how much the functioning of our global world depends on the functioning of the financial market. Many of the most important and brightest minds began to wonder if this toxic threat of collapse was not an inherent part of our global economy. To this day, they have not found an answer that would satisfy themselves. What this means is that we are living on a powder keg. World-renowned experts have their say in this program.
