Brief synopsis
Bernd is an actor he has to play the gasman. The theater piece of the same title plays shortly before the end of the Third Reich. He drives around the country with a mobile gas chamber and picks up week and needy people. Right from the beginning Bernd is skeptical about the play. He mistrusts the director who so far has been making films only. His first theater production is to be pure entertainment.
Bernd's friends are a group of eccentric men who regularly meet as a literature group. His only gleam of hope is his liaison with a mysterious young woman.
