When 10-year-old Maya travels to Thailand with her family to bury her grandmother in a small, forgotten place by the sea, she suddenly finds herself confronted with her German-Thai reality.
Her father's ignorance of the foreign culture and her mother's retreat into a world of rents and customs unfamiliar to Maya culminate in an uncomfortable speechlessness. The sultry heat and the inability to grieve together over the grandmother's death escalates the parents' pent-up emotions. In the tense atmosphere, Maya tries to find answers in her own way. She is fascinated by the mystical place of her ancestors, and the sea magically attracts her.
But the family seems to be falling apart. Finally Maya gathers all her courage...
