Coffee is this nation’s favourite beverage. The average German drinks more coffee than water: 162 litres per year. Coffee is far more than just a hot beverage – it is an integral part of our culture, an expression of conviviality and a deserved time out. “Unsere Geschichte” takes viewers on a trip across all the states of North Germany – with thrilling anecdotes told by our protagonists, impressive archival footage and the trendiest coffee creations of the day.
The documentary follows our North German protagonists, who have devoted their entire lives to the aromatic beans. Together with the coffee expert Bärbel Dahms, we repeatedly look back in history – to the origins of our centuries-old coffee culture: how everything began, in the 17th century, in the first North German coffee houses; how Hamburg merchants “developed a taste” for it in the empire; and how finally in the 20th century coffee brick packs became a mass-market product.
